Shock - Acceptance - Excitement

My wedding baby is due in one week. ONE WEEK. My body has passed the pregnancy test with flying colors thus far. When the birth day finally arrives, I will remind myself of this,

"Giving birth is an innately instinctive act, hardwired into our brains and bodies through millions of years of mammalian evolution, and designed to ensure the best possible outcomes for mothers and babies." ~Sarah J. Buckley, Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering.

I have love and support all around, but ultimately
this moment calls on the abilities of my body and mind.

Home Sweet Home - Update #2

WE MOVED IN!

 hanging art

 stocking shelves

finding a perfect fit
lining the library

There are little things here and there that need tweaking, but it’s great to be in! Having my own washer/dryer, dish washer and ice-dispensing fridge is delightful. My favorite part is all the specialty lighting and the white walls. It looks like an art gallery. We are currently displaying a friend’s collection, and it looks amazing. I’ve been making so many trips to department stores for…

Soap
Hoses
Hardware
Picture hooks and wire
Light bulbs
Trash bags
Ziplocs
Detergent
Shelves
Sheets
Etc.

The to-do list continues but so does the warmth in my heart while I nest.

Who Are You? in your bedroom...

Periodically the universe asks me, “Who are you?”

This is an important and ever evolving question. Today, I stumbled upon one artist who takes this question to the extreme in her work and even in her own bedroom  stream-of-consciousness drawings. Read more about her and her space here.

In My Face

My husband takes lots of photos of me, especially double exposures of my face. Above is a double exposure that he took of me in a flea market. I was annoyed (as usual) that I had to pose and hold up a black shirt behind my head...in the middle of a store. Of course, I love the result.

The second one is another film photo that he took of me just moments after we said our vows. He loves it and so do I.

Love Locks

So yeah. I've been busy. I went to Houston for beer week, Athens Georgia for the best beer shopping in the country and New York for an annual Broadway show and eating/shopping experience. I got Sheetrock up in the house, which is a huge step! Oh and...I got married!!! Yep.

This is where the journey home has taken me...into the arms of my love.

We came here floating on separate clouds from separate lands heavy with rain but light in spirit. We converged ever so lightly for a brief moment. Light enough not to frighten either of us away but memorable enough to last forever.

This moment was magic (rarely have I used this word before now) but for us through this experience, the word is defined.

A friend of mine traveled to Germany the week of our wedding. He toasted us from afar with a German brew and walked across this bridge while thinking of us on our special day. The bridge was full of love locks. Each individual locked to another symbolizing love and union.

In Matters of Darkness

my dad's backyard during a hail storm

…. I said to my soul, be still, and wait without hope
For hope would be hope for the wrong thing; wait without love,
For love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith
But the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting.
Wait without thought, for you are not ready for thought:
So the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing.

T. S. Elliot,  from The Four Quartets:  East Coker

Artist Goes Under

At a point in my life when a day devoted to discovering artists and musicians on the internet is a rare and cherished occasion, I am happy to find small gems worthy of sharing with you. I stumbled upon Jason deCaires Taylor's sculptures on an interesting blog called The Jealous Curator. The great thing about blogs is that you can browse previously weeded through material that is handed to you, well formatted, on a click-able silver platter.

What I find interesting about Jason's work is the concrete sculptures themselves, life-like emotional representations of the human form and the obvious part of dropping these sculptures at the bottom of the ocean. This is where nature takes over; the sea creatures become the artists and
magic happens.
I view the work, I read the history, and I figure out how it relates to me. How will it inspire me? In this case, it's the artist biography. An excerpt:

"Much of his childhood was spent on the coral reefs of Malaysia where he developed a profound love of the sea and a fascination with the natural world. This would later lead him to spend several years working as a scuba diving instructor in various parts of the globe, developing a strong interest in conservation, underwater naturalism and photography. His bond with the sea remains a constant throughout Taylor's life though other key influences are found far from the oceans. During his teenage years, work as a graffiti artist fired his interest in the relationship between art and the environment, fostering an ambition to produce art in public spaces and directing the focus of his formal art training. He graduated in 1998 from the London Institute of Arts, with a B.A. Honours in Sculpture and Ceramics. Later, experience in Canterbury Cathedral taught him traditional stone carving techniques whilst five years working in set design and concert installations exposed him to cranes, lifting, logistics and completing projects on a grand scale."

Ideas worth anything do not come from thin air. Most of the time great things come from passion and experience. A job as a scuba diving instructor doesn't commonly lead to large scale, sculptural artistry. I am invigorated as I look forward to the future. What part of my background will spring board into my prolific future? I suspect it's the part of my background that is the least likely influence. It won't be my design accreditation or degrees, it'll be the time I spent being dragged from antique shop to antique shop or the time I spent as a child around 18-wheelers and cement mixers.

You never know.

All That Glitters

I've been making jewelry in my spare time. I found some cool "findings" (jewelry term for accent pieces) in NYC. I have no idea what they were originally, but I found a pile of them at a flea market and envisioned earrings. Several dollars, tools and beads later my visions came to life. What do you think?
